Estimating piping around bridge piers using the SSIIM software
Authors
Abstract:
Estimating maximum scour depth is normally required in order to determine the depth of bridge piles. The present paper uses the SSIIM Software which considers flow and sediment equations in a three dimensional manner. The software models flow field around circular bridge pile by resolving Navier-Stokes three-dimensional equations and k- method, and by temporary solution of flow field and continuity equations variations of bottom levels around bridge pile was determined. In order to verify the results of the simulated model, they were compared with those of laboratory experiments. The results indicate that the model can be used with high accuracy to simulate scour and estimating scour depth around bridge piles.

Prediction of scour depth around bridge piers using Gaussian process
A reliable prognostics framework is essential to prevent catastrophic failure of bridges due to scour. In the U.S., scour accounts for almost 60% of bridge failures. Currently available techniques in the literature for predicting scour are mostly based on empirical equations and deterministic regression models, like Neural Networks and Support Vector Machines, and do not predict the evolution o...
full textInvestigating Effect of Netted Collars on Scouring Around Bridge Piers Using Flow-3D
The present study used Flow-3D to investigate the effect of installing netted collars with different shapes on bridge piers. The results showed that installing netted triangular, circular, square, and rectangular collars with a hole diameter of 0.1 (d/D) reduced scouring by 49.5, 52.2, 52.7, and 56.5 percent, respectively, compared to the case with no collars. A hole diameter of 0.15 (d/D) for ...
full textExperimental Investigation of Scour Hole Geometry around Circular Bridge Piers
Failure of the bridges due to local scour around their piers can cause serious life losses and property damages and create significant environmental problems. In this experimental study, scour hole geometry around circular bridge piers were investigated. The experiments were carried out in a rectangular flume 80 cm wide, 18.6 m long and 75 cm high by using uniform sediment with a median diamete...
full textDesign of Riprap Stone Around Bridge Piers Using Empirical and Neural Network Method
An attempt was made to develop a method for sizing stable riprap around bridge piers based on a huge amount of experimental data, which is available in the literature. All available experimental data for circular as well as round-nose-and-tail rectangular piers were collected. The data for rectangular piers, with different aspect ratios, aligned with the flow or skewed at different angles to th...
full textEffect of Collars and Bars in Reducing the Local Scour Around Cylindrical Bridge Piers
In the present work, the efficiency of single and double collar in reducing scour rate and depth around cylindrical bridge piers was studied experimentally. In order to reduce the strength of wake vortices, different numbers of bars were also installed at the downstream face of the pier in combination with a single collar. The best result was achieved for double collar when the collars were ins...
full textAnalysis of Flow Pattern with Low Reynolds Number around Different Shapes of Bridge Piers, and Determination of Hydrodynamic Forces, using Open Foam Software
In many cases, a set of obstacles, such as bridge piers and abutments, are located in the river waterway. Bridge piers disrupt river’s normal flow, and the created turbulence and disturbance causes diversion of flow lines and creates rotational flow. Geometric shape and position of the piers with respect to flow direction and also number of piers and their spacing are effective on changing the ...
